DIFFERENT COLOUR OF VACUTAINER AND THEIR USES IN MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE





  • CONTAINERS CONTAINING NO ANTICOAGULANT
  1. Gold or Tiger Red/Black Top: Clot Activator and gel for serum separation.
  2. Red Top Plastic Tubes: contain a Clot Activator and used when serum is need.
  3. Orange or Gray/Yellow Tiger Top: contain thrombin a rapid clot activator for stat serum test.

  • CONTAINERS CONTAINING ANTICOAGULANT(S)
  1. Green Top color contains sodium heparin or lithium heparin. Used for plasma determination in clinical chemistry.
  2. Light green tiger for plasma determination.
  3. Purple or Lavender: contain EDTA anticoagulant. Usually used for complete blood count.
  4. Grey: these tubes contain fluoride and oxalate. Lurid prevent blood from working.
  5. Light blue: contain a measured amount of citrate and these tubes are used for coagulation assay.
  6. Pink: similar to purple, these are used for blood banking.
